Troubleshooting Secure Certificate Issues in Email

An SSL certificate error might appear in your Email App (mostly in Outlook or Apple Mail) when accessing your web site with https://, with a message along of the line of "name mismatch", or can not verify .
It happens because your web domain does not have a secure certificate of its own and is using the HIS server certificate by default.

Outlook

Error example:
“Internet Security Warning” dialog box with the message;
The server you are connected to is using a security certificate that cannot be verified.
The target principal name is incorrect.

You can click on “View Certificate” and install the certificate, but you will still get this dialog each time you start Outlook.

If you want to get rid of this security certificate warning message, change the server name in your Outlook settings to the HIS server name instead of mail. This way it'll match the SSL certificate name and will not trigger this error.

  1. Edit your incoming and outgoing email account settings:
  2. Replace mail. with psaXXX.his.com

If you don't know the name of server hosting your email account, email HIS Support or call our 24/7 Support number: 301-255-0500 Option #2 for tech Support.

Apple Mail App

Error example: "Can not verify < server name>", or "Cannot Verify Server identity".

If Mail can’t verify a server or a signature, you can review the certificate.

  1. In the Verify Certificate dialog, click Show Certificate.
  2. Review the certificate, you should see it is issued to *.his.com.
  3. Select the checkbox to always trust the certificate.

If that does not work, edit the account settings:

  1. Open 'Settings > Mail > Accounts', tap the account and address.
    Under Incoming Mail server:
  2. Re-type the hostname (use either mail..com or psaXXX.his.com)
You should have the option to trust the server then.

Repeat for your Outgoing Mail server: SMTP if you are getting warnings about the SSL certificate while sending mail.
