Email Whitelist Instructions for mailing lists

Increasingly, ISPs like AOL are using filtering systems to try and keep spam out of their customers' mailboxes. Sometimes, they accidentally filter the e-mail that mailing users want to receive. In many cases we are notified that the list e-mail didn't get through, or has been reported as SPAM. To make sure that the email list messages are not filtered into a "junk" or "bulk" folder, please have your list members add your mailing list to their list of trusted senders.

Have your AOL users follow the directions below.

For AOL version 9.0 or higher

If you're using AOL, you can ensure that your mailing list emails are delivered to your inbox by setting your mail controls. Here's how:

  1. Click on the 'Mail' Menu in the Menu Bar along the top of the screen, or,
  2. Click on 'Mail Center'
  3. Mail Center Screen appears,
  4. Under 'Mail Preferences' click on 'Customize your e-mail' and click 'Next'
  5. Under 'Essentials' click on 'Spam Controls' and click 'Next'
  6. Mail and Spam Controls Screen appears
  7. On the right panel of the screen make sure that 'Mail filtered by AOL's Advanced Spam Filter' is turned On (checkmark appears), and that underneath that you have both 'Mail with clickable Hyperlinks (URLS)' and 'Mail containing words and phrases on my Custom Word List' turned Off (no checkmark appearing).
  8. On the left panel
    If your mailing list does include pictures, you can make sure that 'Block mail containing pictures or files' is turned off (no checkmark appearing), otherwise turn it on.
  9. On the left panel select either:
    • 'Allow mail from all senders' (allows ALL e-mail) or
    • 'Use a Custom Sender list' (allows selective e-mail)
    • Note: the other options are too selective to allow e-mail from a mailing list, and almost anyone else who might send you e-mail.

If you select Option 1 above: 'Allow mail from all senders', you're done.

If you select Option 2 above: 'Use a Custom Sender list'

Follow these instructions to allow incoming e-mail from the mailing list:

    1. Click on the blue link: 'Custom Sender List' that is part of 'Use a Custom Sender List' option.
    2. The Custom Sender List appears
      1. Make sure you select the second option (*) 'Allow only the domains and senders listed below'
      2. In the space provided, enter the addresses below:
        • enter your mailing list domain name and Click 'Add'
        • enter your mailing list senders address and Click 'Add'
  • To allow e-mail from AOL or your friends at AOL you also want to do the following...
  • In the space provided, enter the addresses below:
    • aol.com and Click 'Add'
  • To accept e-mail from other domains add the other domains in the same way you did above for all of the domains or friends e-mail addresses you want to add.
  • Click 'Save' (on the Custom Sender List screen)
Click 'Save to Apply these Mail Controls' (on the Mail and Spam Controls screen) Close any remaining open windows.

For AOL version 7.0, or 8.0:

    1. Click on the 'Mail' Menu in the Menu Bar along the top of the screen.
    2. Click on 'Mail Controls'
    3. About Mail Controls Screen appears, Click on 'Next'
    4. Select 'Customize Mail Controls for this Screen Name', and Click 'Next'
    5. Select either
      1. 'Allow e-mail from all AOL members, e-mail addresses, and domains.' (allows ALL e-mail) or
      2. 'Allow e-mail from all AOL members, and from the listed domains and e-mail addresses. Block e-mail from all others.' (allows selective e-mail)

If you select Option 1 above: 'Allow e-mail from all AOL members, e-mail addresses, and domains.', you're done.

If you select Option 2 above: 'Allow e-mail from all AOL members, and from the listed domains and e-mail addresses. Block e-mail from all others.'

Follow these instructions to allow e-mail from the mailing list:

  1. In the space provided, enter the addresses below:
    • enter your mailing list domain name and Click 'Add'
    • enter your mailing list sender address and Click 'Add'
  2. Click "Next"
  3. Select 'Allow this Screen Name to send and receive mail with pictures and files'.
  4. Click Save to Apply these Mail Controls.

For Earthlink Users

Add our email address to your online Address Book:

  1. Use webmail.earthlink.net and log-in.
  2. Select the "Address Book" link from the list of links on the left.
  3. Next to the Add button, select "Contact" from the dropdown and then click Add.
  4. For First Name, enter the list name.
  5. For Email, enter listname@lists101.his.com
  6. (or listname-bounce@lists101.his.com if you list used automatic bounce processing)

For Hotmail Users

Add the list sending address to your Junk E-mail Protection Safe List:

  1. Head to hotmail.com and login as usual.
  2. Click the "Options" link in the upper-right.
  3. Select "Mail" from the left-hand options (not the main toolbar tabs that go across the top)
  4. Click the "Junk E-mail Protection" link.
  5. Click the "Safe List" link.
  6. Enter lists101.his.com and click the Add button.

For Yahoo Users

Try first checking your Junk Mail folder:

  1. Head to Yahoo Mail and login as usual.
  2. In the folders list on the left, click your Bulk or Junk Mail folder.
  3. In the list of messages, look for a message from the list.
  4. Click the "This is Not Spam" button in either the listing of messages or after clicking into the message itself.
